Langtang Valley and Gosaikund Pass

Langtang Gosaikunda trek combines the remote and spectacular valley of Langtang, with the high mountain lakes at Gosainkund. Visit the beautiful Langtang National park and then trek to the end of the valley to view the wonderful mountains views. Following the Trisuli River north out of Kathmandu, we travel through Trisuli Bazaar and Dhunche to Syabrubensi, a Sherpa village located at the very edge of the Langtang National Park. We then swing east into the Langtang valley, crossing the river several times as we travel up along a gorge-like, lower section of the valley. We pass through oak and rhododendron forests and even cross glacial moraine on our way to the Tamang village of Langtang.

A little further up the valley is Kyangin Gompa, where we stop overnight and sample the local yak cheese. We pass through Nubamatang, nestled in a hidden valley, on our way up to view the glaciers, which mark the gateway into Tibet. Backtracking, we travel through Syabru and Sing Gompa to a high plateau, where the sacred lake Gosainkund is located. Crossing the Llaurebena Pass (4610m), we continue south, leaving the Langtang region behind us as we travel through the Helambu valley to Gul Bhanjyang.

This trek is considered as a non-technical trek and suitable for average people. If you are moderately fit and have a sense of adventure will enjoy this trek. The program is designed to acclimatize you gradually and not expected high altitude sickness. However you are requested to check your altitude fitness and the itinerary.
We suggest you to strengthen your knee muscles and prepare for several days of steep descents. Some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, biking or aerobics is recommended, but mostly hiking on steep hills or running up and down steps are preferable.
Please note that the following program is prepared in the fact basis however can be change in some circumstances but adjustments will have to made during the trekking. We request you to be flexible with the situation to enjoy yourself.
As the trek is designed for camping arrangement, everything is handled by our team of porters, sherpas and cooks who carry the equipment, assemble and dissemble the camp and have hot meals waiting for you at every food break.
 
 
DETAIL ITINERARY

Day 01- Arrival Kathmandu
You will be met by Holidays Destination Trekking and Travel staffs at Airport and transferred to the hotel. The remainder of the afternoon at leisure for you to explore, Kathmandu has more World Heritage sites than any other city in the world. A pre-trek briefing will be given this evening.

Day 02- Drives from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi (1460m.) which takes about 9 hours.
Drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi. You must depart early for the nine hours drive to your starting point at the foot of the Langtang Valley. The road takes a scenic route, climbing high over the ridges to escape the Kathmandu Valley and provides you with a superb panorama of the Himalaya, including the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and the peaks of the Langtang region that you will soon get familiar with. Stay overnight at a hotel.

Day 03- Trek from Syabru Besi to Lama Hotel (2410m.) which takes about 7 hours.
The trail initially crosses the Bhote Kosi, flowing down from Tibet, and then gradually climbs up through the sub-tropical forests, teeming with bird-life, to join the trail from Syabru. You then follow the river, climbing through uninhabited forests of oak and rhododendron and may catch a glimpse of langur monkeys roaming through the trees. You climb along a steep trail to your camp in the forest. Stay Overnight at local guest house.

Day 04- Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang village (3430m.) which takes about 7 hours.
We continue climbing there are occasional glimpses of Langtang Lirung between the forests. At Ghora Tabela (3000m) the trail comes out from the forest. The trail continues to climb gently and the valley widens, passing a few temporary settlements used by herders who bring their livestock to graze in the high pastures during the summer months. There is a monastery which you can visit shortly before arriving at the village of Langtang, the headquarters of the Langtang National Park. Stay overnight at a local village lodge.

Day 05- Trek from Langtang village to Kyangjin Gompa (3730m.) which takes about 4 hours.
The trail climbs gradually through small villages and yak pastures as the valley opens out further and the views become more extensive. After crossing several small streams and moraines, the trail reaches the settlement at Kyangjin. You should arrive at Kyangjin by lunch time allowing time to acclimatize and explore the area. It is a dramatic setting with snowy peaks surrounding you in all directions. You can enjoy panoramic views of Kyangjin Ri (4750m.), Tsergo Ri (5000m.), Ganja la (5160m.), Langshi sa- ri (6427m.), Dorji Lhakpa (6430m.), Naya Kang (5844m.), Yala peak (5500m.) and so on. Stay overnight at guest house.

Day 06- Rest this day in Kyangjin Gompa.
It is a day to rest and explore the area. You can visit the monastery and the cheese factory, walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice faces and tumbling glaciers of Langtang Lirung or ascend Tserko Ri [4984m], directly behind the village for a breathtaking panorama of the Langtang peaks. Stay overnight at a same lodge.

Day 07- Trek from Kyangjin gompa to Lama Hotel (2410m.)which takes about 6 hours.
From Kyangjin gompa we back same route, following the Langtang Khola to Langtang village and on to Ghora Tabela. After lunch you continue the steep descent to Lama Hotel. Stay overnight at local guest house.

Day 08- Trek from Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru (2130m.) which takes about 6 hours.
We retrace your steps to Thulo Syabru, and then follow a steep path through forest which brings in to the view Syabru village and its extensive area of millet terraces. A surging path brings you to this fascinating village. This is big Tamang village in this area and there is one local monastery too. Stay overnight at a local village guest house.

Day 09- Trek from Thulo Syabru to Shing Gompa (3330m) which takes about 6 hours.
From Thulo Syabru it is a steep climb through dense forests of oak, fir and rhododendron to the top of a ridge. From here it is only a short descent to Shing Gompa. There is a Buddhist monastery, made by wood and a small cheese factory here. Stay overnight at a guest house.

Day 10- Trek from Shing Gompa to Gosaikund (4380m.) which takes about 7 hours.
From Sing Gompa you climb a trek to the main Gosainkund trail. There are good views across Langtang valley to Langtang Lirung. To the west there are dramatic views of the Ganesh Himal and Manaslu. Eventually, the trail descends from the ridge to the first of three lakes, Saraswati Kund. The second lake in the chain is named Bhairab Kund, and the third, Gosainkund. This lake is particularly sacred and a place of pilgrimage in the summer. According to legend, this lake was created by Shiva when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water, quenching his thirst after taking some poison. Stay overnight at a local guest house nearby Goshainkund Lake.

Day 11- Trek from Gosaikund to Ghopte (3430m.) which takes about 6 hours.
The trail goes up Gosainkund and climbs through rugged mountain area, past four more small lakes to the Laurebina La [4610m], the highest point of this trek. Keep looking back for wonderful views of Manaslu and the mountains of the Ganesh Himal, as well as the now familiar Langtang Lirung. You then descend steeply down to phedi and walking several bamboo forests to Ghopte. Stay overnight at a local guest house.

Day 12- Trek from Ghopte to Kutumsang (2440m) which takes about 6 hours.
The trail continues through the forest of pine & juniper about 2 hour's slope up to Thadepati. Except ascending to Tharepati, there is the view point for Dorjelakpa Himalayan range. The rest of the trail will descend. Sufficient hotels, lodges and tea-house are available on the route. Attractive Mountain views as well as local peoples' life style, culture; customs would be additional subject of interests.

Day 13- Trek from Kutumsang to Chisopani (2165m) which takes about 6 hours.
A pleasant walk down to the Pati bhanyjyang and walking up to Chisopani you can enjoy another spectacular view from Chisopani.

Day 15- Chisopani to Kathmandu
 Trek up to pass and down to Sundarijal on the way you will pass Tamang village and Rhododendron forest after Sundarijal drive back to Kathmandu. Today we stay overnight at hotel.

Day 16- Sightseeing around Kathmandu valley.
 Full day’s sightseeing in Kathmandu valley includes the Hindu temple complex at Pashupatinath & the biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath( both UNESCO World Heritage Site). Also visit Monkey Temple the Swyambhunath and visit Patan Durbar square of fine arts. Return to the hotel.

Day 17- Transfer to the Airport for your final departure.
Holidays Destination Trekking and Travel team will take you to the airport for your flight home. On the other hand, if you prefer to stay longer, you can go for short tours such as game drive at National parks, Jungle safari, rafting, Tibet tours, mountain biking etc.

-3-meals per day prepared by local teahouse/restaurant/guest house.
